TOADSTOOLS & BIRDS
My voice / Becomes the wind / Mushroom-hunting . . . . . . . . . 19th century haiku by Japanese poet MASAOKA SHIKI [1867-1902]
TAYSIDE AND ANGUS BUTTERFLIES, MOTHS, FUNGI AND BIRDS
STARTED WEBSITE 2014 to record fungi foraging in DUNDEE, SCOTLAND, then in 2019 moved house to BRECHIN where continued foraging but on April 29,2020 expanded into amateur BIRD PHOTOGRAPHY but include anything else that takes my interest such as charity events, butterflies, etc
If area not mentioned in fungi photo it will be Dundee area, other pages are from Brechin area
[BIRDS] AND [FUNGI] NOW HAVE DROP-DOWN MENUS [courtesy of son] UPDATED August 2, 2020.
HOVER OVER DESIRED SECTION TO VIEW MENUS
To put my slant on the old argument of what is a Mushroom or a Toadstool - I use both terms to describe any form which looks similar to Agarics or Boletes but use Fungi to describe the forms found in Ascomycota, Basidiomycota and Brackets. There is also no reason to use Toadstool specifically to describe poisonous forms, considering that unless you are very well informed it would be difficult to know which are poisonous in the first place. Which brings us neatly into the one thing that must be adhered to - UNLESS YOU ARE CERTAIN OF THE MUSHROOM YOU ARE PICKING - DO NOT EAT IT.

KINGFISHER [Alcedo atthis]
Birder pointed out this tiny bird going like an express train across Lurgies inlet; also River Esk. Electric blue and bright orange plumage. Seen it 6 times now but photo very difficult. Closest was Sept. 1, 2023, when away to take shot a seagull landed and scared it away - all I needed was two seconds more. Not recorded
LESSER YELLOW LEGS [Tringa flavipes]
Seen at Lurgies on September 1, 2023, after I met a group of twitchers who had arrived after being notified on their bird app - my appearance was by chance.
Saw it through tripod binocular of one of the group but too far for photo. A rare find in Scotland indeed. Not recorded

BIRD WALKS OF 2024
MAY 8
Late afternoon walk to Wigeon/Shelduck Hides but not a lot around during a high tide. Saw oyster catcher, male/female eider, shelduck, male/female mallard, a mixed group of 30+ mute and whooper swan, pink-footed goose, around six of them [didn't realise they would still be around in May], skylark [tractors were preparing the fields so small birds were absent, although crow and seagull were trailing after the machines]
MAY 10
Tayock at low tide but few around due to fisherman bait digging. Only oyster catcher and gulls. Small birds were noisy in undergrowth but few sang in view, only robin, starling, dunnock, magpie, male/female blackbird [I'm that desperate]. Then into Wildlife Centre to see grey heron, mallard and little egret. Small / large white, peacock, orange-tipped butterflies [good number of orange type] at Tayock. See [Butterflies / Moths]
MAY 11
Good Wigeon walk in hot, morning sun to view chaffinch, greenfinch, yellowhammer, wren, but best was whitethroat [rarely seen by myself] and grey partridge; eider [in a field which I've not seen before], mix of mute and whooper swan in field, curlew, mallard, male/female shoveller not often seen, shelduck, grey heron; small white and peacock butterflies
MAY 13
Warm, sunny afternoon so along to River Esk. Pleasant walk but only saw mallard, great tit, pied wagtail; also large / small white, peacock, orange-tipped butterflies so nothing to shout about
MAY 17
Hazy, breezy, sunny day with trip to Tayock near high tide for a disappointing wander to view oyster catcher, mallard, magpie, chaffinch; also small white and orange-tipped butterflies [a good year for orange-tips]. Popped into Wildlife Centre where saw wigeon, little egret, mallard and around 40 common tern which I don't often see so that was the highlight - too far and heat-haze ruined photo
MAY 18
Began Wigeon walk in hot sun but halfway a coastal fog rolled in and ruined things. Saw starling, yellow hammer, chaffinch, swallow, mute swan, merganser, many eider, mallard before heading home. Returned inland to hot sun again. Walk place variety curtailed due to bridge repairs entailing long detours
